Blue screen errors, are they casued by a virus?

Over the years, we've been providing top-notch computer repair and service in Regina, addressing various issues that prompt our customers to seek professional assistance.  One prevalent concern, particularly affecting Windows-based systems (with Apple having its own variation), is the notorious "blue screen of death."  Many users mistakenly attribute it to viruses, prompting them to turn to our specialized virus removal services.

The blue screen of death is a Windows fault error that surfaces following a system crash, either before or after a restart.

While numerous blue screen error variations exist, we'll delve into those affecting the majority of our customers and outline how we diagnose and resolve these issues—most of which are unrelated to viruses or malware.

In diagnosing a blue screen error, we prioritize determining whether it stems from hardware or software issues.

Ruling out hardware vs. software:

After gathering information on when and how the error occurs, we conduct a comprehensive hard drive test using tools like Parted Magic or, for SSDs or other NAID drives, Crystal Disk. Additionally, a MEM test, utilizing various open-source tools, helps assess RAM health.  This dual approach provides insights into the hard drive's state.  If the system crashes during these tests (both running outside the Windows OS), we can eliminate Windows as the root cause.

The MEM test also offers insights into CPU health, with CPU failures being rare in our experience.  Occasionally, CPU errors may signal board failure.  We also scrutinize the client's power supply, ensuring it meets or exceeds the system's minimum requirements.  Gaming systems, for example, often demand a 650W or higher power supply, as low-wattage supplies can lead to erratic behavior under load.

Hardware tests out; what's next?

If hardware checks out, we aim to replicate the issue within the Windows environment. Does it occur during gaming, while playing a YouTube video, or while running specific programs? Moving on to typical software causes of Windows blue screen errors:

·        Bad Windows Update: Have you recently updated your Windows-based system? Windows updates, at times, trigger blue screen errors. A recent incident involved certain label printers, causing disruptions for several business customers.

·        Incompatible Drivers: Video drivers are common culprits, but any hardware driver, including sound and certain printer drivers, can cause issues. Incorrect or untested GPU drivers or even the game itself may clash with system drivers, leading to crashes.

·        Program Conflicts: Some programs, like a previous version of Avast Antivirus and MS Skype, or current antivirus software like Norton's and Kaspersky, may not interact well, resulting in a blue screen system crash.

When confronted with a perplexing Windows-related blue screen error, consult the Windows Error logs. Analyzing system events leading up to the crash can provide valuable information on the computer's activities before the incident.

Other Causes:

While the outlined methods address and resolve the majority (90%) of blue screen errors encountered in our computer repair business, exceptions do exist.  These inlcude the possiblity, that they are caused by a virus.
